ORIGIN OF CHLORASTROLITE
Chlorastrolite Greenstone also referred to as “Isle Royale Greenstone” can only be found in Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Isle Royale in Lake Superior. Many of the location sites for mining the gem are now restricted and prohibit mining the gem due to the surplus of minors attempting to extract the gem over the past decades. Due to limited access and location sites where this gem cultivates, many will argue that it is indeed very rare. Kirk continues to mine these gems from non-restricted sites and carefully and organically collects the gems by using an old-fashioned mining technique, which consist of manual labor using a mining hammer, gloves and a bucket. Though this technique takes significantly more time and effort to gather the gems, it’s profoundly better for the environment and results in less damage to the gems themselves.
OUR GOAL
The stone is known for its deep greens and blues with light green/whiteish veins that create small square or starry patterns throughout the stone. Not all chlorastrolite green stone is created equally due to differences in mineral content effecting the chemical composition of the gem quality, clarity, color scheme and intricacy of pattern. We at kirk’s Gallery pride ourselves in providing high quality gems at consumer friendly cost in both our jewelry designs and individual pieces of gems.
